The short answer to the question "who uses online shopping?" is everyone. People from all walks of life, every age group and every country of the world all buy goods and services over the internet.

Shopping over the internet can be done 7 days a week 24 hours a day from the comfort of your own home. This access and convenience makes internet shopping attractive to people who have difficulty accessing real world shops such as the disabled, mothers with young children and even shift workers or those people who work long hours.

Many people who live in rural or remote areas also use internet shopping; this is so they can access a much wider variety of goods than they can in their own communities without the need to travel to a major centre. Many people also shop online to avoid weather extremes such as extreme heat or cold that they would have to deal with traveling to a real world store. Avoiding crowds is another reason many people opt for shopping online.

Collectors and people looking for specialist products, or hard to get products also shop online as they can search the world for the item they want. Searching the internet and thus the world will give you a much better chance to find hard to get items like the cup you need to make your great grandmothers dinner set complete again.

The other advantage for buyers is that an item may actually be cheaper when sourced overseas as it may not be as valuable in that country or culture i.e. something that is highly collectible in the UK, such as football memorabilia may have found its way overseas with an expat and the seller in a foreign country may have no idea of its real value in the UK.

The ability to compare hundreds or even thousands of similar products and prices without having to spend days traipsing around from one store to another is a good reason for many people to shop online. You can research the item you wish to buy and even find reviews of items by people who have previously purchased them, giving you a real idea of the suitability of the product to your needs.

Finally there are many real bargains to be found on the internet as the sellers do not need to rent or pay a mortgage on a shop, with all of the associated costs such as electricity, insurance, and sales staff. The savings in these costs is often reflected in the price of buying an item online versus in the real world.

The amount of competition on the internet also leads to some fantastic bargains such as some of the discounted airfare tickets available online.

The only basic requirement necessary to be able to shop online is internet access. Many online sellers do not even require you to own a credit card and will provide several payment options such as direct bank transfer, the ability to send a cheque or money order or to pay through a secure third party money exchange such as PayPal.
